I've sometimes noticed, again, much more technically knowledgable writers really helpful problem solvers where a conversation reaches an impasse, and users with a common problem are given the suggestion of contacting Apple Support or others.

Personally, I feel satisfaction that a potential problem is identified and the transfer of the issue details to the owners of potential fixes is encouraged. But whenever I read a suggestion of essentially "Why turn off Bonjour, since it only creates traffic inside your network And for what purpose. Since I didn't ask the question, as someone reading such a response it raises so many more questions, namely what don't I know and why don't I know it?

Sometimes an answer of "it works that way, but I'm not sure why" would be preferable to "what do you care? The most important thing, to me, is that these forums exist where very skilled and experienced people are willing to help those of us that find ourselves with a computer not quite behaving the way we think it should, but really don't know what to do about it or what to do next. Everything I wrote above is not an attack nor is any malice intended - the information provided without as far as I know any compensation other than gratitude is crucial to why I remain an Apple customer.

I've seen the "other side" to be specific Windows and it's 'support' and I believe that the quality of the support here, centrally and universally available is a critical differentiator for Apple. I'm personally grateful for it and at times I am in awe of both the help and the respect and restraint under which it can be given.

I know how hard it can be an expert about a product while at the same time responding, even in public forums, to product questions that literally make other users roll their eyes.

Sure the fact I was being paid as part of my everyday job to listen respectfully and respond appropriately was an initial motivator; indeed the exposure of standing in front of customer representatives strongly invested in my product and not only mine, of course often asking very difficult questions could be intense. What worked for me was a grounding in the belief those folks were real people with issues they believed I could help them solve. Some of them never even fully understood the issue in detail, since the audience included very technical folks, hands-on technology implantation and support folks, and also many managers up to CEOs and Vice Presidents in a diverse customer base.

So, rather than read all of the potential lost functionality that will occur should I disable Bonjour, I'll just disable it and look for problems or lost functionality. Simply because turning it off, after reading a few dozen related questions, may help solve some of my networking problems - problems I only have when attempting to interact with my Mac.

I'm guessing this is all very simple to explain, yet I really only want one thing, that all of my network connected machines are at least visible to all the others, and that authenticated communication is supported between the machines allowing for file copies, movement, deletion, etc. I'll leave it there, and again, I know that there a more gratitude in the user community that is rarely expressed, or simply lost due to frustrations with ourselves not understanding. I'd like to especially thank the folks that ask good, specific questions that help define, quantify and qualify issues so that they can be resolved in clear and concise ways preventing "collateral damage" by dumb users like me.

Not having an answer is not failure, nor should anyone be disappointed that they, no matter how much they know and are willing to support the rest of us, need to know every possible answer to any problem - that's simply impossible. My motives for seeking help here often include disappointment and frustration, not so much of a product or software, but my own inability to understand or acknowledge the need to ask for help.

A good analogy is what often appears to be an irrational resistance to asking for directions when driving, or where a particular thing may be found in a large store - an issue that appears to be a trait and at times a handicap for men, and likely related to a bunch of psychological reasons that aren't important. As far as I can tell, we're all here to get and give help to others, and I know that help is usually on point, asked from a perspective the person asking can understand, and given carefully, without regard to recognition or even gratitude.

Once the Mac has restarted, Bonjour advertisement should be disabled. My colleague Steve Yuroff tested the profile independently and let me know that this may not be manageable via a profile after all. I re-tested and was able to reproduce his results. We have both verified that running the defaults command listed above does produce the expected behavior.
